Col 2:6 As therefore you have received the Christ, even Jesus our Lord, live and act in vital union with Him;
Col 2:7 having the roots of your being firmly planted in Him, and continually building yourselves up in Him, and always being increasingly confirmed in the faith as you were taught it, and abounding in it with thanksgiving.
And the Jubilee Bible says
Col 2:6 Therefore in the manner in which ye received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him,
Col 2:7 rooted and built up in him and confirmed in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
The receiving heart
The day we received Christ was the day we humbled ourself to the point of death. In order to receive Him we had to humble ourself.
But the problem for many(especially men) is that we do not like to remain humble and weak.
Yet in order to continually receive Christ Jesus we must remain in that receptive condition.
“Therefore in the manner in which ye received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him…”
Also it must be said that you and I received Christ Jesus by Faith, not by works.
The repentance was a gift from Father.
The faith was also a gift from Father.
Jesus is the Gift of God to all –but only those who humble themselves receive Him.
Paul is emphasizing the way in which you received Jesus so as to also say that this is the way you should live.
The just shall live by His faith.
Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ; nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me, and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Gal 2:21 I do not reject the grace of God, for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
We received Christ Jesus by faith, which is really His faith anyway. We come alive through His faith, and live by His faith.
Paul says, ” so walk ye in him,
Col 2:7 rooted and built up in him and confirmed(established) in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. JUB …..or ….having the roots of your being firmly planted in Him, and continually building yourselves up in Him, and always being increasingly confirmed in the faith as you were taught it, and abounding in it with thanksgiving. WNT
Rooted, built up, established in the faith(of Jesus)—as you have been taught.
Paul had been teaching and preaching them- Christ in you the hope of Glory, in order to present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. Col 1:27-28
He had taught them that they are complete in Christ.
That they are in Him who is the head of all principalities and powers.
That they are “reconciled” to God
That they are “holy and blameless and unreproveable in his sight”
That they are sharers in the inheritance of the saints
That He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Paul taught them that in Jesus all the fullness of God dwells, and that they are in Him – so they are FULL of God as well!
Paul taught them that in Christ(in them) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
He taught that in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
It was in this faith that they were being built up and encouraged to continue in.
Paul taught them that ALL their trespasses are forgiven, that they died with Christ and now Live in Christ unto God– free from any accusations from the Law.
Other voices were saying to them that Christ is not enough. Others were teaching that they must do some things to be acceptable and obedient to God.
Paul said that they were trying to deceive them and to steal their reward.
What was their message?
It was the basic principles of the world..outward commandments…and traditions of men.
Beware lest anyone cheat you!!
Being in Christ means that you are acceptable to God.
Being in Jesus means that the Law cannot accuse you of anything.
But all those who try to please the Law’s requirements are not acceptable to God.
They have snubbed His work for them on the cross…and prefer to justify themselves by their own efforts.
There are works of course…it is not all empty faith–or as James says- “Faith without works”.
But having established them in the Faith of Christ Paul is confifent that fruitful works will flow out of their lives like grapes on the Vine.
In fact he says this is the case at the start of the letter saying-
Col 1:5 because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel,
Col 1:6 which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth;
Notice the fruit comes as a result of knowing the grace of God in Truth!
The grace of God in truth! Not a weakened version of the Truth..but Jesus living as you by His Zoe Life.
Fruit does not come about through self effort but through abiding in the vine who is Christ Jesus Himself.
So when Paul exhorts them to put off certain things and to put on certain behaviours…it is with the Gospel of “Christ in you” as their abiding place. All that they do is out of this vital union and being rooted and established IN CHRIST.
So that he finally says
Col 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,
Col 3:24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
It may appear to the immature or carnal thinker that rewards are earned after all….”whatever you do do it…” “..knowing that you will receive the reward of the inheritance…” !
But this doing is coming out from being firmly rooted and grounded in Jesus so that you know that the Old you has died and is no longer working for God..but that you are a new creation, alive in union with Christ in you. Until we know this we will only produce mixed fruit.
Let’s face it, the Lions Club or Rotary Club members can all get together and do good things for people—is this the fruit God is after? They may do many things…but the “reward of the inheritance” is only given to those HE HAS MADE WORTHY.
Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
Col 1:12 and give thanks to the Father who has made us fit to receive our share of the inheritance of God’s people in Light.
1) to make sufficient, render fit
1a) to equip one with adequate power to perform duties of one
The Power is Christ Jesus, His Life in you, which is now your Life as you are in Union with Him.
There is a lot of encouragement in this letter!
